Taranaki Base Hospital - Stage Two

This ‘5 Green Star – Design’ rated project is part of the phased redevelopment of the Taranaki Base Hospital, carried out in line with the site masterplan.

Warren and Mahoney provided Masterplanning, AHFG and Condition surveys in support of the strategic business case and are providing healthcare planning, architecture, lead consultant, interiors, data management and architectural subconsultants for stage two.

About this Project

Key features of the new East Wing:

  • A new Emergency Department (twice as large as the current ED) and Intensive Care Unit
  • A rooftop helipad, which will mean faster, safer patient transfers
  • Purpose-built maternity facilities and delivery suite, a new postnatal ward and neonatal unit
  • Upgraded laboratory and radiology services
  • A dedicated tupapaku facility for the viewing of the deceased before leaving the hospital

Seismic features of the project include:

  • Option investigation for base isolation vs viscous dampers;
  • Junction detailing for bridges and to existing buildings;
  • Review and removal of fall risk from surrounding buildings onto both IL4 Buildings and supporting services;
  • Replacement and duplication of IT hubs;
  • Construction of an energy centre to remove services for IL4 buildings from earthquake-vulnerable tunnels;
  • Examination and inclusion of additional plant to support resilience in existing buildings (notably removal of dependence on steam and existing boilers).
